Some boxes come with a lot of wires, and it’s sometimes hard to figure out where each one goes. This is a list of things that are called “front panel connectors.” In all but a few cases, they are always connected directly to the motherboard.

How to connect the cables on the front panel of the box

The first thing we need to do is find the part of the motherboard where the connection panel for these box cables is on, so we can plug them in. Almost always, it is in the lower right corner of the motherboard, close to the edge.

This is a general rule: Each connector has its name printed on it, and in some cases, the word “PANEL” is also printed on it, which makes it easy for you to tell which is which.

Make sure you know what the positive and negative cables are. If they aren’t marked, white is always negative and the other, no matter what colour it is, is always positive. Often, both of the cables are black.

The trick is to make sure that the area where the name of the connector is written always faces away from the motherboard.

Cables for the USB ports

The USB 2.0 cable (or cables, depending on how many USB ports there are on the front of the box) is also connected to the motherboard. It is used to make the front USB ports of the box work, in other words.

As a general rule, these connect to connectors on the board called USB3. Usually, they’re found on the right edge, in the centre, and below the ATX connector, or in the lower centre area, near the USB 2.0 connector (or both).

In this case, you can only connect it in one direction. The male connector has a protrusion, and the female connector has a groove where the protrusion will fit.
