Let’s see how to do it together!
Connect Bluetooth Headphones to Mac
At first glance, the process of connecting any pair of Bluetooth headphones to your Mac looks like any other device.
For example, the constant is always the same: make both the master device and the slave device available for pairing. Only by pairing can they enter a short-distance wireless network, which we commonly call Bluetooth.
However, the individual operations performed vary by device. If you want to connect your Bluetooth headphones to a computer running Windows, you need to follow the instructions that I am going to show you here.
The same goes for other uses: the PS4 has the distinction of not supporting all models, for example. In this case, connecting Bluetooth headphones to the ps4 console requires a very different approach.
Let’s see what you need to do to use your Bluetooth headphones with Apple!
Turn on Bluetooth on MacOS
With this first operation, you will ask your Mac to find devices that support Bluetooth within a certain distance.
To enable it, you’ll need to access “System Preferences”: you can do this by clicking on the gear icon in the post-bar.
At this point, find the icon with the classic Bluetooth logo and then click the “Turn on Bluetooth” button that will appear on the next screen.
Sometimes, hardware issues can make your Mac’s Bluetooth module unusable. Even then, it would be possible for you to connect Bluetooth headphones, but you will need a Bluetooth adapter to do so.
This is a stick very similar to pen drives that you have to attach to a USB port: on this Amazon page, you will find some examples for all budgets.
However, before making any purchases, check that the drivers are compatible with MacOS.
Turn on Bluetooth on your headphones
How to enable pairing mode on Bluetooth headphones is different from the model.
In most cases, just hold down the on / off button to turn on the headphones and turn on the pair at the same time.
Other models, however, will have a dedicated Bluetooth button or you will have to press a set of keys. For example, in Marshall Major II you have to turn them on and then double tap the on / off button.
In general, to enable pairing mode, take a look at the manual of your headphones. Now we’re finally ready to connect headphones to Mac!
Connect Bluetooth headphones and MacOS
On Mac, go back to “System Preferences” and then go to the Settings section dedicated to Bluetooth connectivity. The name of the headphones you just made “identifiable” should appear on the window that opens.
Next to the name, a “Connect” button will also appear: Clicking will start the pairing. Don’t worry, it shouldn’t take more than a few seconds.
Now that you’ve finally connected your Bluetooth headphones to your Mac, you need to know that this connection has two very interesting features:
When both devices are on and in range, they will connect automatically.
When Mac and headphones are connected, headphones are the default audio signal input and output device.
To change this setting, just click the speaker icon in the menu bar at the top right. From there you can choose which sound to output and, if you also have a microphone attached, what to bring.
How to solve Bluetooth problems on Mac.
In some cases, you may find yourself unable to turn on Bluetooth on MacOS or connect your headphones.
If these are not hardware issues, for which Bluetooth adapters can be very useful, you may need to reset the settings for the Mac’s Bluetooth chip.
To do this, you will need to follow these steps:
- Go to “System Preferences” and “Bluetooth”, as we have seen before.
- Check out the item that says “Show Bluetooth”: This way, the Bluetooth icon will be available in the menu bar.
- Press the Shift + Option keys on your keyboard and then mouse over the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar.
- A menu will open where you have to select the item “Debug” and then “Remove all devices”
- Next, select the item “Debug” and then “Reset Bluetooth Module”;
- Restart your Mac and try the Bluetooth headphone connection method again.
As you may have already guessed from these simple steps, this operation will delete all Bluetooth devices stored by Mac.
Simply put, you have to repair each of them. However, it may fix the connection issues we saw at the beginning of the paragraph.
