What Is a Motherboard’s BIOS Chip?

The Basic Input and Output System, or BIOS, is written on a chip on your motherboard. This chip is also called the BIOS chip.

BIOS is a type of software that is permanently stored on that little chip and can’t be erased without taking it out of the computer.

How do you figure out which BIOS chip your motherboard has?

To find it, look at the labels on the motherboard until you find one that says M BIOS, UEFI BIOS, or something similar.

Older motherboards almost never have it, but newer ones almost always do. Many BIOS chips have a glittery sticker or a coloured blob on them so you can find them.

But how can you know which BIOS chip is on your motherboard? What options do you have once you’ve found it? Where does it usually live? Everything you need to know is in the rest of the post.

What Is a Motherboard's BIOS Chip?

Why is it so important to check your BIOS?

BIOS is also known as POST, which stands for “Power On Self Test.” This shows if the PC meets the minimum requirements for starting up right.

If your PC can’t do POST, it will make a series of beeps that tell you which part is broken. If you hear these sounds, you’ll need to examine your BIOS to see what’s wrong.

To do this, you’ll have to take out your CPU and look at your motherboard.

Where can I find the BIOS?

Most of the time, the BIOS is on the edge or corner of the motherboard. Most likely, it will be near where the coin cell goes in. It’s the one with the BIOS setting, after all.

It’s important to know that this is called CMOS memory. What does the CMOS memory do? The SMC controller or the SuperIO holds the CMOS memory.

Also, remember that this SuperIO/SMC is the adapter that connects directly to your BIOS. The rest of the PC’s hardware can now use your BIOS. Since that’s the case, it makes sense that they’ll be close.

If you can’t find it here, look near the PCIe slots for the CR2032 battery. But if you can’t find it there, try looking for it in these chipsets.

But most motherboard makers call the BIOS by that name, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find. If you still can’t find it, you can download the motherboard design from the manufacturer’s website.

It should be able to find the BIOS with great accuracy.

How Can I Tell If My Motherboard Has A BIOS Chip?

Because the BIOS on your motherboard is such an important part of the booting process, if it fails, your computer won’t be able to start up.

It will either refuse to turn on or you will be trapped on a screen displaying the logo of the motherboard maker. If you want to fix your BIOS, you can try to reset the CMOS battery. After 30 seconds, take it off and put it back.

But what if the CMOS battery reset doesn’t work? If your motherboard has two BIOS, you can try to install a new one or switch to the backup BIOS. If you have no other choice, the only thing you can do is replace the BIOS chip.

But unless you know a lot about computers, you should never try to change the BIOS chip on your motherboard.

Because they are sensitive, electronic parts are hard to work with. You can always ask a professional in a computer store to replace the BIOS chip for you.

If you can, send the motherboard back to the manufacturer and ask for a new one.

How do you find the BIOS chip on your motherboard after that?

Most of the time, the BIOS chip is below the CPU socket or on the bottom right edge of the motherboard. This is not a rule, though, and it could be found somewhere else.

It’s usually marked with a small coloured dot on the PCB of the motherboard, which is good news.

But it would be easier for you to find the BIOS chip if you read the manual or looked up the model and manufacturer of your motherboard and checked the BIOS chip location.

The motherboard documentation will show the layout of the motherboard, making it easy to find the BIOS chip.

Now that you know where the BIOS chip is, you’ll need to find a new one if you want to replace it yourself. First, check your motherboard’s BIOS version.

It’s usually written on the chip, but it could also be in the documentation for the motherboard.

BIOS chips come in different kinds, so make sure you get the right one for your motherboard. If you are sure you can do it, you should only replace the BIOS chip yourself.

If the BIOS chip or the PCB around it is broken in any way, it could damage the motherboard in a way that can’t be fixed.

What Is a Motherboard's BIOS Chip?

The only thing the BIOS chip does is store your BIOS. Since the BIOS is a type of firmware, the motherboard keeps it and can always get to it.

It’s pretty easy to find the BIOS chip. It’s usually on the right side of the bottom of the board, either below the CPU socket or near the CMOS battery.

Most of the time, the chip will have a sticker or dot on it that lets you know who made it. If you know where the BIOS chip is, you can change it if you are an expert.

If it doesn’t, you should have a computer store replace it.
